Belladonna or Deadly Nightshade’s first bloom of 2020

Belladonna or Deadly Nightshade, May 4, 2020

I didn’t expect this Belladonna plant to make it. Last year I found myself without any Belladonna, so ordered a plant. I planted it in a spot shadier than usual, and it put off a few blooms and promptly died back, till eventually the weeds took it over.

But surprisingly it’s back this year, and blooming at the beginning of May. The earliest I’ve ever had Belladonna bloom was late June, often July. So this is interesting. It’s even shadier this year which could help, considering our hot summers. It’s well shaded by two Monkshood plants, with Daylillies and a Yew bush behind it.

Expecting no Belladonna this year, I ordered five before this one came back. I have a friend who makes brooms … perhaps she can sell flying ointment to go with them? Baby fat not included.
