I loved reading about your trip to Salem, it was extremely interesting!
a very good read indeed!
although I've been wanting to go for years, i'm planning my first of many trips there in October and i'm even more exited now.
I'm glad your page gave me more information about the history, sites and stores I should visit.
thank you!

I found it mind-boggling, though my mind is easily boggled I confess, that so many of the sites are still around - victim's homes, accuser's homes, as well as a couple of the official structures. The Rebecca Nurse Homestead is a great site but I could never rustle anyone up to go inside. Keep planning on going back to the area and walking the old routes through the village, which would probably still be possible, but it's a thousand miles away and I'm always short of time. Not to mention you'd probably get mowed down by traffic.

It *is* a preternaturally quiet site, given that Centre Street is so busy. I spent a lot of time there as a kid. Haven't been there for years, but am hoping to take some friends there this summer. Their daughter has been studying the trials in her history class this year, and was excited to learn that I could show her where it all began.

Thanks for writing. I've been back there several times since and yep, same feeling every time. Very unusual as typically I don't feel a thing when visiting most sites. It's a very quiet spot considering the location, and truly eerie to walk down the steps into the foundation, and think of all that took place right where your head would be, and all that sprung up out of it. One of my favorite places!

I'm fascinated by your experience at the parsonage site. My grandmother grew up in one of the houses flanking the cart path back to the site, and that used to be the "back field," where she and her siblings and the other local kids would play. She said that there was always this FEELING about that field, and in the 1920s and '30s, they didn't have an inkling that the parsonage had once stood there. The site was excavated in 1970; my grandparents lived across the street at that time (in the house where my grandfather grew up), and were glad for the explanation of why the field had always felt a bit haunted.

I do need to say... Good page, you did justice to the grand city of Salem, however calling Giles Corey a "Warlock" which means traitor would be incorrect and slightly disturbing. He was often times refered to as "The Old Wizard". He was not a traitor to the state/church, only to his wives.
