To be honest, I never came across any reference to this from any credible source. The native Americans in the area did believe in thunderbirds however, which might have been one explanation.

I enjoyed the discussions of Mt. Misery and learned a lot about the area from them. Thank you for allowing me to tag along on an interesting and fun hike in the haunted hills of Long Island! Stunning photographs and lively, well-written, well-informed points of view. I look forward to reading more!

I really love this website! the photos are lovely and the stories are well written, interesting & fun! I had to read this one, because I grew up in West Hills and have walked in the woods at sunset and before the sun has risen, and have spent a lot of time at Jayne's Hill and on Sweet Hollow road and Mt Misery (Plus Chichester!) It is interesting that I never heard of the asylum myth, but we all knew, growing up, that the Peace & Plenty Inn on Chichester was haunted!!

Thanks and great work!
